need-to-see nineties movies directed by Tim Burton: Ed Wood
I
feel that this is a great movie to begin my trip through the nineties. Tim
Burton had his hands all over my eighties movies bracket (Beetlejuice and Batman),
so he needed to show up somewhere on this list as well. In my opinion, this is
Burton’s masterpiece. The score is fantastic (thank you, Danny Elfman), and the
colors used in the film put you in a magical world like no other. The Boggs
family is full of heart: Peg the Avon saleswoman, Bill the bowling champion,
and Kim the Winona Ryder (we will get back to her). The town is full of
gossipers (Joyce, Helen, Esmeralda), good people (Officer Allen, The Inventor),
and a bad guy (Jim) who would give his left nut for anything.
But
we all know who the main star of the movie is. It’s Kim, I mean Edward. The
master of the hedge trim, the haircut, and the shish kebab. He doesn’t like
lemonade, but he does like Kim. So much that he creates an ice sculpture for
her in my favorite scene in the movie. I would even go so far as to say it is
one of my favorite scenes in any movie I have ever seen. It’s Winona Ryder ... in
the snow ... dancing!! Of course, the scene is cut short and ruined by Jim. But
the movie ends with a touching moment involving Edward and Kim saying their goodbyes
and I love yous.
As
I mentioned earlier, Tim Burton represented my eighties movies bracket well.
But so did Winona Ryder. Beetlejuice
and Heathers both won a matchup. It
will be interesting to see how far she can go in the nineties movies bracket. This
movie is her only chance. Mermaids, Dracula, The Age of Innocence, Reality
Bites, Little Women, How to Make an American Quilt, Alien: Resurrection, and Girl, Interrupted didn’t make the cut. Yes, I saw all of those movies. I
used to see all of her movies, but over the last 16 years I have only seen six.
I guess I have a lot of catching up to do.
